Who gets out of districts? Our first September estimates
Team qualification can carry a runner to regionals without reaching the separate individual boundary. A close contest for the last team place can also change which runners must advance on their own.
With the East District meet at Cambridge High School set for October 24, our best early estimate for Division IV is an individual cut near 20:00 for boys and 23:15 for girls. Division III has many more qualifying places, and our early estimates are correspondingly more generous: 21:00 for boys and 29:00 for girls. For Division II boys, the current working estimate is 19:30.
These September 13 estimates describe the last additional individual place. They combine early 2026 results, the district assignments and last year's Cambridge races, including assumptions about returning runners whose current results were missing. The forecasts adopted a current-season-only approach on September 20.
The forecast for each field
| Field | Best guess | Working range | Confidence | Places available |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Division II boys | 19:30 | 18:45–20:30 | Low | 3 teams + 6 additional individuals |
| Division II girls | Team route for John Glenn, if complete and eligible | No individual time needed for an advancing team | Conditional on entries | 4 teams + 8 additional individuals |
| Division III boys | 21:00 | 20:15–22:00 | Low | 12 teams + 24 additional individuals |
| Division III girls | 29:00 | 27:00–31:30 | Very low | 13 teams + 26 additional individuals |
| Division IV boys | 20:00 | 19:15–20:45 | Low | 4 teams + 8 additional individuals |
| Division IV girls | 23:15 | 22:15–24:45 | Low | 4 teams + 8 additional individuals |
The ranges leave room for changes in the field and the final team lineups. Different courses make season-best times an imperfect guide to Cambridge, and the last qualifier can finish outside the estimated range.
Division IV: a different boys field changes the question
Shenandoah has an encouraging team case. Joel Tewksbary ran 16:19.50 at Fort Frye, and the Zeps had seven boys finish by 18:39.10. Garaway and Caldwell also appear on the qualifying side of our provisional team ordering. The fourth berth is less settled, with Newcomerstown, Crooksville and Malvern among the teams whose outcomes can change the individual pool.
Newcomerstown holds the last boys team place in the September 13 projection. If Crooksville advances instead, its runners leave the individual contest and the estimated final additional mark changes from 20:10.30 to 20:06.01. This early forecast includes historical returning-runner assumptions alongside current results.
Bellaire and Fort Frye's boys, both qualifying teams in the 2025 Division IV race, have moved to Division III in 2026. That change makes last year's 19:13 boundary a poor guide on its own. The September 13 estimate is around 20:00, with several weeks of racing and final entries still ahead.
Bellaire, Shadyside, Fort Frye and Catholic Central lead the girls team projection. Newcomerstown and Shenandoah are also in the chase, and a change in the fourth qualifying team changes the individual race. The tested boundaries range from 23:22 to 23:32, compared with 22:14 last year. The headline estimate is 23:15, with a broad 22:15–24:45 range.
Division III: more places, and a particularly open girls race
Division III boys have twelve team places and another 24 individual places this year. The provisional scenarios put the last additional individual around 21:00–21:13, depending on whether Barnesville, Sandy Valley or Indian Valley takes the final team place in the tested ordering.
Barnesville, Sandy Valley and Indian Valley are among the schools near the last projected team place. Final district lineups and the rest of the assigned field will determine how close that contest becomes.
Division III girls sends thirteen teams and another twenty-six individuals to regionals. Last year's twenty-sixth additional girl ran 28:17. This early projection, which includes historical returner assumptions, places the boundary at 31:03.60; the available current-only results contain fewer than twenty-six girls outside the projected qualifying teams.
Those gaps in the early field make the girls outlook especially uncertain. The September 13 estimate is around 29:00, with a 27:00–31:30 range. A small final field could leave a route for every eligible finisher, while larger complete lineups would make the individual contest deeper.
John Glenn’s girls have a different route
The current Division II girls assignment lists Dover, John Glenn, New Philadelphia and Tri Valley as team-designated schools, with four team berths available. Steubenville and Zanesville are listed for individual entries.
If those assignments hold, a complete eligible John Glenn girls team can advance together. The eight additional individual places provide a separate route for runners outside the four qualifying teams.
Three Division II boys teams advance. The early projection places Dover, Carrollton and New Philadelphia in those places, with a final additional mark of 20:18.00. If John Glenn advances in Carrollton's place, the boundary becomes 19:10.61. New Philadelphia's complete current lineup was not yet available for this September 13 forecast.
The close team contest supports a broad individual estimate: around 19:30, with an 18:45–20:30 range. Last year's final additional qualifier ran 19:23.
Two routes to regionals
Teams score through their first five finishers. The sixth and seventh runners can move opposing scorers back, and a sixth finisher can decide a tied team result.
Runners on qualifying teams advance together. The additional individual places then go to runners outside those teams, which is why the final team contest can also change the individual boundary.
Cambridge will decide those places on October 24. Season bests and earlier Cambridge races offer context, while this year's final entries and race-day performances will decide the outcome.
The public watch includes runners within ninety seconds of their field's September 13 estimate. That gives watch marks of 21:00 for Division II boys; 22:30 and 30:30 for Division III boys and girls; and 21:30 and 24:45 for Division IV boys and girls. John Glenn's girls have the separate team route described above.
What changed, and what comes next
The September 7 forecast is preserved for comparison. Its boys ranges were 18:50–19:20 in Division II, 20:15–21:15 in Division III and 18:50–19:15 in Division IV. The girls ranges were 25:00–27:30 in Division III and 22:05–22:35 in Division IV. The September 13 outlook widened those ranges as more results arrived and several lineups remained incomplete.
Correction: after the eleven qualifying teams were removed from the 2025 Division III boys field, the twenty-second additional individual ran 21:13. The earlier reference to approximately 22:04 was incorrect. The September 7 archive carries the same correction.
The weekly district outlook follows all six fields as new races arrive and final entries take shape. Each school uses the estimate for its assigned race. Cambridge district qualifiers will race at Pickerington North on October 31.
