A school record, young talent and our first postseason clues
Vinny Campbell's record and repeat win lead a strong early-season start, while young runners across the area give several programs reason to look ahead.
Start with 15:25
Meadowbrook sophomore Vinny Campbell ran a school-record 15:25 at Claymont. That is roughly 4:58 per mile for 3.1 miles, and it belongs in serious statewide company.
He backed it up at Newcomerstown with another win in 15:42. Landen Perdue ran 15:46 and Union Local senior Connor Bendo ran 16:14. Bendo finished seventh at the 2025 Division III state meet, making Campbell's win over him a strong early-season result.
A school record and two wins have put Campbell among the area's leading All-Ohio prospects early in his sophomore season.
The group behind him is young
Shenandoah sophomore Joel Tewksbary ran 16:22 at Newcomerstown. Cambridge junior Brayden Biddle ran 16:49, improving from 16:57 at Claymont. Caldwell sophomore Zane Boyd ran 17:08, while Meadowbrook junior Luke Norman ran 17:13 after a 17:31 opener.
Tewksbary, Biddle, Boyd and Norman are all nonseniors, giving the area's leading boys group plenty of racing ahead beyond this autumn.
| Athlete | School | Class | Current mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinny Campbell | Meadowbrook | 10 | 15:25 |
| Connor Bendo | Union Local | 12 | 16:14 |
| Joel Tewksbary | Shenandoah | 10 | 16:22 |
| Brayden Biddle | Cambridge | 11 | 16:49 |
| Zane Boyd | Caldwell | 10 | 17:08 |
The girls’ front is strong, too
Claymont senior Kali Wallace opened in 18:38. For context, she ran 18:35.83 to finish eighth at the 2025 Division III state meet. Shenandoah senior Ida Estadt ran 19:07 at Newcomerstown.
Indian Valley has the young pack: sophomore Rowan Harshey at 19:44, freshman Bridget Pittis at 20:15 and sophomore Bailey Herbert at 20:51. One runner can earn attention; several runners in the same range can change a team race.
What does it take to reach regionals?
A regional berth can come through a team finish or an individual place. That makes the whole district field important, rather than one target time.
When a team qualifies, its runners advance together and leave the separate individual contest. A close battle for the final team place can therefore change which athletes take the additional individual berths.
The site's regional watch includes runners within ninety seconds of their field's estimated individual boundary. The same estimate applies to every local school in that race, while team qualification gives runners another route.
Middle school: four schools in 12 seconds
Buckeye Trail eighth-grader Emmett Taylor opened with a 12:00 two-mile runner-up finish, then ran 12:23 for second at Newcomerstown. Three eighth-graders from neighboring programs were close behind: Caldwell’s Conner Wilson at 12:31, Shenandoah’s Bennett Hendershot at 12:35 and Barnesville’s Dawson Hanse at 12:35.
Taylor, Wilson, Hendershot and Hanse all finished within twelve seconds at Newcomerstown, giving four local programs a closely matched group to follow in the coming races.
Follow the season
The weekly reports bring together the individual wins, team finishes and developing rivalries from the area's twelve programs. School pages follow every listed runner's season, while the district outlook tracks the postseason field.
As the season develops, those results will show which runners move up and which teams bring their scoring groups closer together.
